Part of my conclusion has been that I need to blog more. You're welcome, readers. :)

Anyhow, as part of this I'm going to try to keep more with the theme of the blog, therefore I share with you all the following: I'm eating a tuna and hummus (red pepper) sandwich, and it's amazing. Totally not what I expected. So y'all can expect to see this thing popping up in sandwich shops around town, though I hope they'll give me some royalties for the ideas. Pita Pit and I are about to become good friends. Long story short: there's a myth about lipids, and they're not what's causing obesity. There's a lot more than that, if you're willing to read it all. type='text'>One door closes, another one opens (I hope)

Well, here I am sitting on the couch with a warm laptop computer on my lap, reflecting on how this is my last Sunday afternoon here in the States for the next little while. In fact, it is one of the last times I'll ever get to sit on this couch under the context of this being "my" apartment, due to the fact that I'm moving out this week.

I don't think this is the time or place to have a "year in review" kind of thing, but I would like to say that living here in Santa Barbara #205 has been quite a trip. I've just seen what is probably the last of most of the people from this ward I've been in, and I would like to say here what I told my roommate Paul just this morning. We all know that irony seems to play a big part in all our lives, but I find it truly ironic that it's only as I'm leaving this ward, this community, this group of similarly-situation-ed people, that I'm beginning to have things that I wanted all along. For example, I didn't feel a whole lot of social outreach from the ward, or simply put, I didn't sense any Mr. Rogers-esque friendliness from just about anyone, until now. As a rule, the girls of the ward seemed to ignore me, until now. In general, "family home evening" was a consistent disappointment, until now. I could go on an on.

Yes I know that perhaps a lot of this may come from what was summed up well in some song about a parking lot, "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?" Yes I know that I may have just changed my attitude about things and I may have just started trying harder (and I may have lost ten pounds), but NONETHELESS THINGS ARE NOT AS THEY ONCE WERE and I can't help but laugh as I realize that yes, I'm going to miss it.

Then again, that brings up the original post title, which can basically be summed up as, "I know that things are only going to get better, but I see how they could have been improved in the past." Then again, hindsight is 20-20. Or better than that, really.

A bunch'o stuffs

Alright y'alls, I know it's been way too long. But keep your eyeballs locked on the computer machine, because you're about to get your minds blown when I head down south, because I'm'a start updating weekly.

In the mean time, let's have some of what I like to call "brain dumpage," so you can know what's been going on a little bit:

-I almost got sprayed all over with Roundup (NOTE: highly toxic substance) AND almost run over by a large truck whilst atop a lawn mower (NOTE: the truck was inches from the lawn mower) today at work-- within about 30 seconds. It was epic.

-Some guys across the street are rappelling down the side of the apartment complex across the street from me right now. I don't want to watch someone die, so I'm in here typing.

-Also at work: I got what I would call a "retro-active" raise, meaning that the money I would have earned had I gotten a raise when I should have was recently deposited into my account to the value of a hefty sum. It was great.

-My roommate Chad up and moved out the other day, so now I finally have space, er, a guilt-free place for all my junk to be. Nothing has changed postiion really, it's just not in anyone's way but mine.

-Nelson (brother in law), Michael and Sarah Judson and I did an overnight backpacking trip on Lone Peak this weekend, hence the picture. It was amazing. I got to test out a lot of my gear for the first time, and it was all great. I can't imagine the trip having gone over better.

-As a result of said trip, I got sunburned for the first time in years. My nose turned red and is peeling a little right now, but you can't tell. That's what bright sun and glacial snow can do to you.

-It seems to be more believable to my brain that I'm actually going to Brazil next week. The feeling of it all still hasn't really sunk in, as they say, but nonetheless the truth is that I'm leaving on a jet plane, I don't know when I'll be back again.

-I think I have a good chance of passing my engineering class (ME 172), provided my TA stays true to his word about not coming to class. He got swine flu. No joke.

-Lest you think otherwise, single, eligible females continue to make little to no sense.

-Lest I leave this tab open forever (like so many others), I'm going to post this as is. Hope you enjoyed it.

No reason

That I know of, I have no real reason to write, or at least I don't really have much to write about. But why not, you know?

A couple of things:

1) I made up my mind today that I'm for sure going to stay here at BYU during spring term. Should be good.

2) I went to a concert last night, and it really made me want to start playing the trombone again. I'm going to audition for the symphonic band in the fall.

3) I went to a reunion of sorts last night for my freshman ward. Not too awkward, but those kinds of things always seem destined to fail for some reason. I really respect people that know how to organize events.

4) Brazil looms nearer by the day. It's a Backcountry.com Shift Softshell jacket, and I got it from Steepandcheap.com, which means it was amongst the sweetest of deals, at $71.62, compared to $198.95 regularly. I'm quite sure it'll complement my growing gear collection quite nicely, plus it's a hot color of white/gray. . . Yum.

I'm going to write a check today for $500.00 for the second installment of my Study Abroad program to Brazil.

I'll likely purchase my plane tickets for said program this week, somewhere in the neighborhood of I'm guessing $900 dollars.

Today is pay day, and I likely got something like $250.00 this pay check (is that proper to tell people what you earn? I guess it doesn't matter if you earn less than them, right? To anyone earning less than $7.30 an hour, I'm sorry).

Doesn't really seem to add up, does it? Luckily it does.

Umm. . . I feel like I kind of wrote myself into a corner here, because there really is an explanation, but I'd feel so terrible if I were to say something to the effect of, "Pay your tithing, and maybe you'll be as blessed as I am!" Nope. Won't say that.

Too Good to Pass Up?

Yeah. . . Without getting into too many details (like names), I feel a sense of civic duty to inform my loyal readers of current goings-on.

1) It's nearing 80 degrees Fahrenheit in my apartment. It's about 35 degrees Fahrenheit outside. This is not an accident. All of us but one are suffering. I'm on the verge of breaking a sweat, and it's making me feel sick. That's right-- one of us "roomies" has an internal heat regulating problem, is in reality sick, and doesn't seem to notice/care about our complaints.

2) Said roommate is listening to a charming mix of SHOW TUNES AND CHRISTMAS MUSIC. LOUDLY. AND SINGING ALONG. I AM NOT KIDDING. The Little Mermaid was great when I was 5, but it's getting old. Oh, and think that's bad? Ever heard of a charming little tune called "Christmas Shoes?" I didn't have the words or courage to tell him to turn it off. (Please notice the date of this posting.) Oh, here's a country song. Joy. It's getting close to the time where noise-canceling headphones are about to become a necessity.

So, I hope you can feel my pain. I think it's therapeutic to write about this kind of thing, even if it sounds like I'm a whiner.

Do you all like the new "decorations" on the blog? If not, you may as well go read it, because it's worth about 3 blog posts at least. The part about liking to buy things on the internet is true.

This brings me to the main topic of today's post, which is, "if you want to get the goods, you have to be good." What this means is, if you're going to try to get steals of deals on the internet, you've got to be quick. I don't have my debit card number memorized--which is fine with me-- but sometimes the goods get sold out quicker than I can put down my info. (I've just taken steps to remedy this.) Yeah, it's frustrating, but do you really get mad at not being able to spend more money? "Oh darn, my wallet is just so fat and I try and I try but I can just never get rid of it all. . ." See what I mean?

Also, I discovered today that going from water to Gatorade after a workout is fine, but vice-versa is not. You can't tell, but only one of my eyes were open because it was so bright. "Squinty" is an understatement.

Yup. I'm pretty positive that I'm going to need a cellphone with a better camera in it. To be honest, as a principle I'm not a huge fan of cellphone cameras, but the truth is that sometimes it's better to have a grainy, low-quality picture than non at all. That said, why not go with a somewhat decent quality photo? It occurs to me that I could swap my iPod touch for an iPhone, but then I wouldn't be on a family plan. . . Hmm. . . More on that later, perhaps. iPhones rock.

PS. If you take the "B" out of "blizzard," you get "lizzard." Which. . .is like "lizard," but spelled wrong. I thought that was cool. . .

PPS. Sorry about the spacing, the html and the formatting don't really get along. Plus it looked fine in the preview. It's scary how much emotion it evokes just reading that stuff.

At any rate, I feel much better. God is looking out for me, and He's truly putting me where He wants me to be. The Lord recognizes what troubles me, and He's shown me a way out. My Heavenly Father put me where I needed to be, with the people I needed to be with, in order to hear what I needed to hear, so that I could make it past what seemed before like an insurmountable obstacle. It's called a "tender mercy," when that happens. Also, it confirms the presence of angels, on this side of the veil and the other.

That's all I'm going to say about it now, but if you want to read some of what inspired me today, go check out Ezra Taft Benson, “The Great Commandment—Love the Lord,” Ensign, May 1988, 4, on lds.org.

Oh wait, I don't remember if I asked you. . .

Ok y'all, time for a little gripey-gripe. I'm not in the best mood right now, so I'll apologize in advance. I don't really care if this offends, because I'm pretty sure I have a readership of like. . . 4 people. (To you four: you guys are champs! Don't give up!)

-Why do people constantly think I'm cold? Do I look cold? Is it my "rosy" cheeks? Is it my old jackets? Look folks, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've actually been cold to the point of misery, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why you people make such a big deal about my personal comfort on this issue when you seem to not care at all about other stuff that really matters. Case in point: I have yet to do snow removal at the temple without being asked by a (female) coworker if I'm cold. NO. Today at work we were raking pine needles (the snow melted off of them), and a temple patron stopped, stared, and commented, "You don't have any gloves!" ("That's astounding! On your first try!") He then proceeded to ask if I wanted his. Leather. Dress gloves. ANOTHER RESOUNDING NO. The answer is always, and will always be, no. I'm a human furnace, and if my heart rate is anything over resting, I'll probably be sweating to boot. (PS. IF ANY OF MY ROOMMATES ARE READING THIS, YOU HAVE A SERIOUS INTERNAL TEMPERATURE PROBLEM, ONE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND LEAVES THE THERMOSTAT AT 75ºF IN THE WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN, OR ANY TIME IN BETWEEN.)

-College. Man, do I hate college. Nothing like a little hoop jumping to get you down, eh? It's not all bad, of course, but it just seems so impossible to not have to go through *ahem* hell if you want to get a certificate saying you're qualified to do stuff. One of my all time favorite quotes has got to be, "don't let school get in the way of your education." Why does institutionalized learning have to *ahem* suck so bad? It's so dang expensive, it's so dang hard, it's so dang impersonal, and it's so dang. . . NOT what I want to be doing right now. "Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of Heaven," but being a student seems to bring out the worst in me.

-I'm sorry if this one offends you, but it's really just personal preference: I do not like embedded players in blogs. Believe me, if I'm on the internet, I'm on my computer; if I'm on my computer, I'm listening to music, and the (bleeping) music players are always set to play automatically, so they always try to override my sweet tunes, and that proves irksome.

-My cell phone. To think that people get paid to design these things. . . Does a human being test them before they get sold? Do they conceive of real people using them?

-I would never stoop so low as to stereotype all members of the non-married and eligible female population, but I'm'a say this: THE WAY GIRLS REACT AND REASON AND VIEW LIFE AND EXPECT OTHERS TO ACT are all so ILLOGICAL . . . and I know a lot of really bad drivers who just so happen to be girls as well. Something tells me this is not a coincidence. Say what you will about this one.

-You know how people say they wish they could quit their day jobs? Sometimes I wish I could work full time. . .

-There's too much of what I'd rather be doing. Am I just building up a legacy of regrets? Does everyone feel as strongly as I do about these things? Am I a habitual whiner and pessimist?

And there you have it. I still have two days to decide if I'm going to drop all my classes. Any thoughts?

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='snow removal superiority (take THAT Mt. I'm sure this feeling will be even more amplified this time next week after all of finals are over. Today I finally (I cannot put enough stress on the word "finally" there) got done with my advertising (Comms 230) class' campaign. We presented today, and I feel as though a stone's been taken out of my fairly full backpack. It was a good experience and all, I learned a lot, bladdy blah, but MAN does it feel good to be done. I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to buy a bottle of Listerine. How's that for irony? Seriously though, it was a positive experience overall. Also, I found out today that I just got 12 credits of "A" and 4 of "A minus," all for taking a simple, albeit poorly written, Portuguese test! Neat huh? My GPA really needed that.

There's plenty of other things to do yet today, some of which are calling for my immediate attention, but lemme give a feel good list real quick, aka "What's up":

-I went pheasant hunting last weekend with my brother James, two uncles, two, cousins, and a cousin's friend. It was, in a word, Awesome. Not the kind of "awesome" that you hear everyone using regularly, the kind of "awesome" that is referred to in Kung Fu Panda. 'Nuff said.

-I find myself spending a lot of time with a certain young lady. And that's a good thing.

-As of today, I've decided to do a Study Abroad in Brazil next summer. "But," you may ask, "didn't you serve a mission in Brazil? Wouldn't you prefer to get to see some other place?" Well, dear reader, you're right! I did serve in Brazil! But guess what? 1) I didn't get to see a whole lot of it outside my specificly assigned areas for proselytizing/working, 2) I plan on minoring in Portuguese, and this will put me a lot closer to that, and 3) Frankly, why not? Wouldn't you like to go if you could? Aren't you secretly jealous? Are you openly jealous? It's going to be awesome, I can afford it, and this could be my only chance to return to Brazil in this life. Pretty excited. End of story.

-I have to work for most of Christmas break, but I'm still not going to be in school, so I'm sure it shouldn't be too bad. I'm secretly excited about snow removal. It'll be kind of like a party, only you're not invited. Sorry, but you could probably come watch. Or bring me some hot chocolate.

-Who'da thunk an ipod touch could be so much fun? Shout out to Paul.

-I was totally on to the virus that got around BYU, infecting USB thumb drives. I knew it was a virus when I saw that thing. Sometimes it feels good to be right. Oh, I got rid of it too. That was nice.

Ahh, that felt good.

Another Ode

Not to offend you, dear reader, but I'm really sweaty right now. And I couldn't be happier about it. I've recently discovered something that I get increasingly passionate about, and that something is running. I just ran approximately 4.15 miles-- hence the sweat-- and I feel great. I mean, seriously. There is so much cliché when it comes to running, ("no pain no gain,"), but A) I'm not in pain, and B) I still seem to have gained a lot.

I have a goal to run a half marathon in January, and it looks like I still have quite a ways to go to be ready for that, but it's just part of my bigger goal to run a full marathon next October.

I never thought I'd really get into running, but what with my slowly expanding collection of running gear, I realize that I'm taking it pretty seriously, and seriously loving it. Expect to hear more about this. . . I'm too distracted/busy to write more right now.

Zounds! Exciting News!

Well loyal readers, it's a lovely Friday afternoon (it really is), and there's big news from today.

-Today at work we helped the Wymount crew (with over a thousand trees in your area, who WOULDN'T need help during the fall?), and amongst the leaves I found two wrappers--Tootsie Pop wrappers-- and BOTH of them had stars. Cool, huh? The sad part of this story is that also today I found a reliable source that shows that the "free-sucker-for-a-star-on-a-wrapper" thing is all a myth. In fact, I'd say it's probably the one the longest-running urban legends I've ever heard of, having been tossed around since about the 1930's. But c'mon, you know you like it when you find those stars.

-Also at work, I happened to look over and see this sweet bike on the rack. Yes I wish my bike was called this. Oh wait, actually I probably just want a bike. Preferably a Huffy.

-I haven't been grocery shopping for a *while*. While I must admit that there are a number of notable downsides to this, I'm now at the point where I can't just eat what's easiest or most obvious, I have to be creative to use the stuff I have. Like just now, I found this old, mega-intense-super pancake mix with things like cornmeal, ground oats, flour, etc. etc. It turned out to be amazing. So in the end, I'm finding two things: 1) I don't think I should be this excited about reinforcement for negative behaviors (I could really use some fruit in my fridge. . .) 2) Cooking really is fun, it's not as hard/time consuming as it seems, and against all odds, I'm actually pretty good at making stuff when I put my mind to it.

-I love the 100 Hour Board, and read it daily.

-I yelled myself hoarse cheering at the BYU Women's soccer game last night, but luckily I tend to have a pretty good recovery rate, so I should be able to cheer pretty loudly at the Men's basketball game tonight. (Who'da thunk it would be so fun to yell, "you got swatted!"?) Oh, and I really really want to win some free Nike shoes. I submitted four designs to the NikeID promotion/contest, and they're all pretty "sick" and/or "ballin.'" So yeah.

-For those who don't know (anyone but Julie and Nelson?), I've been getting rather into running recently. I've been running about 10 miles or so a week, and as I work my way up to doing 20, I've come to realize a number of things. 1) I want to do a half-marathon, and Nelson says there's one in January. 2 )I want to do a full marathon, I'm planning on St. George next October. 3) I bought some sweet Brooks running shoes at Runner's Corner in Orem recently, which have effectively served to fuel my growing passion for the sport 4) It's been such lovely weather recently, and I sweat a ton anyway, so the climate has been treating me well. Yup

-At this point I feel like I'd be really having to push myself to find anything to write about, and since I've only got one subscriber so far (props to Carrie!!), I think I'll stop for now.

Cheers.

PS: future topics: Brazil-- summer/winter 2009?, somebody.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wantednotexpected.blogspot.com/2008/11/zounds-exciting-news.html' title='Zounds!
